A career focused on Asia: Diplomacy from the Ground Up

As a diplomat working for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Joseph Caron chose to focus his career on Canada’s relations with Asia. Between 2001 and 2010, he served as Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Ambassador to Japan, and High Commissioner to the Republic of India. In creating this website, Mr. Caron seeks to illustrate how Canada’s foreign policies are pursued by an Embassy and that, by drawing on his day to day activities at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, from the summer of 2001 to that of 2003. Context is also provided, as Canada/China relations were in a particularly dynamic phase. Former Ambassador Caron believes the story he tells will be of particular relevance to Students and Academics, and indeed to the general reader interested in Canada’s engagement in the broader world.
